What you need to make vanilla extract:
One bottle of vodka, any brand will do really. As you can see, I had this one all ready to take to the park with me this afternoon, but the thought of my own vanilla extract made me ditch that idea (shame I wasted a paper bag):
Six vanilla beans (I have tahitian vanilla beans onhand, got them for a great price off the internet, shop around, you can find them too!):
Split your vanilla beans down the length like so:
Place the beans in a glass jar of some sort (I used a pint jar):
Pour vodka over to cover and let sit to steep for at least two months in a cool dark place (covered tightly, shaking it up once in awhile). The longer it sits, the stronger it will be come. Great for cookies (or I suppose you could make your own vanilla vodka with a few less beans just placed straight in the bottle and steeped until it is the flavor you like)!
*Note the vanilla beanie goodness in every fleck floating!

Dearest, you're Blogathonning! I did not realize! Good on you. You're doing brilliantly. :) Alas, I am not 'thonning this year, thanks to my dysfunctional relationship with time management, but I will be cheering my pal Bunni at Bunniblog on, and I'll be sure to do the same for you. :)
Aww, thanks so much, Miz Bakerina! I love the encouragement :D I'm really going to need it, I'm not an early to bed person, so I didn't get much rest last night! I will keep plugging on!
I know why you covered the vodka bottle. You had drank most of it! That is why you went to the park yesterday and asked me before hand if I were tape where would I be.....
Thanks so much for the laugh Boots! Yeah, maybe that is why I covered the bottle.....I'll never tell ;)
An alternative method: after you've scraped the "guts" out of each bean, simply place the used pod into your bottle of vodka. After several months (and lots of pods) you'll have something quite tasty, which is free of the little flecks, and which works quite well in place of the store-bought extract.
Oh, that's a great tip, thank you, Davimack! :D
Sorry, Vanillaman, I'm blogging for a charity here, I'd prefer you keep your ads off my comments, thank you.
